Why Is My Computer So Slow? 7 Fixes Before You Call a Technician

A slow computer is one of the most common problems we see at homes and offices around Calgary. The good news is that many causes are simple. Work through this list in order before you book a repair.
1. Restart it properly
It sounds obvious, but many people only close the lid. A full restart clears memory and finishes pending updates. On Windows, choose Restart, not Shut down, because "Shut down" can keep a fast-startup state.
2. Check what starts with Windows
Too many startup programs slow every boot.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Open the Startup apps tab.
- Disable anything you don't need right away, such as chat apps and updaters.
3. Look at disk, memory and CPU
In Task Manager's Processes tab, sort by Disk, Memory and CPU. If one program is using most of a resource all the time, that is your culprit. If the disk sits near 100% on an older hard drive, the drive itself may be the bottleneck.
4. Free up storage
A drive that is almost full slows down. Aim to keep at least 15% free space. Remove large files you no longer need, empty the recycle bin, and uninstall programs you never use.
5. Scan for malware
Unexpected pop-ups, a changed browser homepage, or fans spinning at idle can point to malware. Run a full scan with Windows Security. If it keeps coming back, you may need professional virus and malware removal.
6. Install updates
Operating system and driver updates fix bugs that cause slowdowns. Install pending updates, then restart.
7. Consider an SSD upgrade or more RAM
If your computer still has a mechanical hard drive, switching to an SSD is often the single biggest speed boost you can make. Adding memory also helps if you keep many tabs and programs open.
When to call a technician
Call for help if you notice any of these:
- Strange noises from the drive or fans
- The computer overheats or shuts down suddenly

- Slowness that returns right after you fix it
